Encyclopaedia of Luna
Welcome to the Encyclopaedia of Luna! This is a glossary of words and phrases frequently used by and associated with Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter books.
Aquavirius Maggots are what Luna spots in the Department of Mysteries. We can guess they are supposed to resemble brains, as this is what they turn out to be.
Blibbering Humdinger is yet another creature not mentioned in Magical Beasts and Where To Find Them, so it’s existence is disputed. Unfortunately, it is only mentioned once, so we don’t have any information on it.
Crumple-Horned Snorkack is, according to the Lovegoods, a Crumple-Horned Snorkack is ‘a shy and highly magical character’ that cannot fly. At the end of OotP, Luna and her father plan on going on a trip to Sweden to find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack, with the money Xenophilius got from selling extra editions of the Quibbler that featured Harry’s interview. Luna’s father also believes he has the crumpled horn from a Snorkack, although later on it turns out to be an Erumpent horn. Oops.
Diadem of Ravenclaw Replica is what Luna’s father made to resemble the lost diadem of Ravenclaw. His version has two objects that resemble golden ear trumpets curving out from the sides (these are Wrackspurt siphons, which remove all sources of distraction from the thinker's immediate area). There is also a tiny pair of glittering blue wings stuck to a leather strap that runs over the top of the head (a Billywig propeller, to induce an elevated frame of mind), with a dirigible plum stuck to a second strap around the forehead (to enhance the ability to accept the extraordinary).
Dirigible Plums resemble orange radishes, and these are what Luna wears as earrings. They are said to enhance the ability to accept the extraordinary.
Dumbledore’s Army is a secret organisation that Luna is a member of. It begins in the Hog’s Head, where the first meeting takes place. Luna says her father is supportive of any anti-ministry action, and so she is pleased to take part in the defence group.
Freshwater Plimpies are found in streams. They are probably similar to Gulping Plimpies.
Gulping Plimpies can be warded off by Gurdyroots. This is all that is known on Gulping Plimpies.
Gurdyroot is supposed to be excellent for warding off Gulping Plimpies. Its appearance resembles a green onion.
Heliopath is another creature that can’t be proven doesn’t exists. Luna claims that Fudge has an army of Heliopaths, backed up by ‘plenty of eyewitness accounts’ whereas Hermione believes they don’t exist. They are supposed to be ‘spirits of fire’ that gallop across the ground burning everything in front of them.
Loony Lovegood is the nickname cruelly given to Luna to describe her eccentric approach to life, her beliefs, and style. It is first mentioned in OotP by Ginny.
Loser’s Lurgy is an illness that Luna thinks may cause you to be unable to keep possession of the Quaffle during a game of Quidditch for more than a minute.
Moon Frogs are first mentioned in the Quibbler, somebody claimed to have flown to the Moon on a Cleansweep Six, and brought back a bag of Moon Frogs to prove it.
Nargles are known by Luna for infesting mistletoe. She seems to think that they are some kind of household pest.
The Quibbler is the magazine run by Luna’s father, Xenophilius Lovegood. It is well known for publishing unusual articles by authors that write for free, for seeing the honour of their name in print. It has published rumours of Sirius Black being a popular singer, and accusations of Cornelius Fudge cooking goblins in pies. It is not a very well respected magazine.
Rotfang Conspiracy is the reason why Luna does not think Harry should be an Auror. All Aurors are part of the movement to bring down the Ministry, according to Luna, with a combination of Dark magic and gum disease.
Spectrespecs are free psychedelic glasses that came in the middle of an edition of the Quibbler. Luna wore these ‘enormous coloured spectacles’.
Thestrals are large, black, reptilian winged horses well known for bringing bad luck. They are described as being ‘completely fleshless’, with ‘black coats clinging to their skeletons’ and they are good at finding places. They are significant because at the start of OotP they are first mentioned as pulling the carts from Hogsmeade to Hogwarts. Harry and Luna can see the creatures, as they have seen death before. Harry saw Cedric die, which is why they had just appeared for him, and Luna saw her mother die when she was nine.
Umgubular Slashkilter is supposedly one of Fudge’s weapons. ‘And there’s his Umgubular Slashkilter-‘ Luna says in a discussion of terrible things that Fudge has in the Department of Mysteries.
Wrackspurts are creatures, believed by Luna, which makes your brain go fuzzy by going through your ears. This could explain situations where you’ve been talking and suddenly forgotten what you were trying to say.
